Packing is the part of moving that people underestimate most. A three-bedroom home takes forty to sixty hours to pack properly, and it is the stage where most damage happens when it is rushed. Our trained packing teams pack homes across Rochester, Medway and Kent every week, using proper materials and a method refined over 800-plus moves, so that on moving day everything simply flows onto the van and into your new home.
We offer three levels of packing, and the right one depends on your time, your budget and how much of the job you want to hand over. Whichever you choose, the materials are included in your fixed quote and the work is covered by the same goods-in-transit and public liability insurance as the move itself.
Unpacking is available too. Most customers have us place boxes room by room and unpack at their own pace, but if you want beds made and the kitchen working on day one, tell us when you book and we will quote for an unpacking team as well.
When we survey a move where the customer plans to self-pack, we quietly add contingency time, because we know from experience what we will often find: boxes without lids, bags instead of boxes, heavy items in large boxes that cannot be lifted safely, and a kitchen that was left until midnight the night before. None of this is a criticism. Packing a whole home is a bigger job than almost anyone expects, and life does not stop to let you do it.
Professionally packed homes move differently. Uniform, double-walled boxes stack securely in the van, which means fewer trips and less movement in transit. Correct weight distribution means the crew works faster and nothing gets crushed. Proper wrapping means your glassware arrives as glassware. Labelling by room means unloading takes half the time and you can find the kettle on the first evening. Across a full move, good packing often saves more time on the day than it costs the day before.
There is an insurance point here too. Goods-in-transit policies across the industry, ours included, provide stronger protection for items packed by the removal company than for owner-packed boxes, where the contents cannot be verified. If specific items genuinely matter to you, the safest place for them is inside our packing.
A packing day runs to a method. The team arrives with everything needed: double-walled boxes in several sizes, acid-free packing paper, bubble wrap, wardrobe cartons, mattress covers, tape and marker pens. We start with the rooms you use least, a spare room or the loft, and finish with the kitchen and daily essentials, so your home stays liveable until the last possible moment.
Every box is packed to a weight a person can actually carry, sealed properly and labelled with its room and a short note of contents. Plates are packed vertically like records, which is how they survive transit. Glasses are wrapped individually and boxed with dividers where needed. Wardrobe cartons let hanging clothes travel on their rails, so they come out the other end without an ironing marathon. Televisions and electronics are wrapped and boxed with cables bagged and labelled. Artwork and mirrors are corner-protected, wrapped and moved flat against the van walls.
For a typical three-bedroom home, a full pack takes one day with a team of two or three. Larger homes or homes with substantial lofts, garages and sheds sometimes need two days, and we will tell you honestly which yours is when we quote.
Packing is priced by the size and contents of your home, and it is always itemised separately on your quote so you can see exactly what it adds. As a working guide, fragile-only packing for an average home is the more budget-friendly option, while a full pack of a three-bedroom house, materials included, typically costs a few hundred pounds on top of the removal itself. Considering it removes forty-plus hours of work and puts the whole job under insurance, most customers who try it once never self-pack again.
Some things need more than paper and a sturdy box. Our teams regularly pack and move pianos, grandfather clocks, artwork collections, wine collections, aquariums, gym equipment and workshop tools across Kent. Each has its own method: pianos travel on skids with the action locked, clocks have their pendulums and weights removed and cased separately, and artwork travels in made-to-fit corner protection.
If you own something unusual, valuable or sentimental, mention it when you request your quote. We will plan for it specifically rather than discovering it on the day, and if an item genuinely needs a specialist beyond our scope, we will say so rather than chance it.
Packing for storage is a different discipline from packing for a same-day move. Items may be stacked for months, so boxes must be uniformly strong, furniture needs breathable wrapping rather than plastic against wood, and anything damp must be dried before it is sealed. Mattresses go into proper covers, sofas are wrapped fully, and we build an inventory as we pack so you know exactly what is in store. If your move involves a storage gap between homes, we handle the packing, the storage and the final delivery as one job with one point of contact.
Plenty of our customers pack part of their own home, and we would rather you do it well. The essentials we tell everyone: start at least two weeks earlier than feels necessary, because packing always takes longer than planned. Use real double-walled boxes rather than supermarket cast-offs, which collapse when stacked. Keep every box under about 20 kilograms, books in small boxes, linens in large ones. Wrap plates individually and pack them on their edges. Label every box with its destination room on the side, not the top, so labels stay visible when stacked. And pack a first-night box of kettle, mugs, chargers, medicines and bedding that travels in your own car.

A full pack of a three-bedroom home usually starts around 8.30am and follows a deliberate route through the house. The loft and spare rooms go first: they hold the least-used belongings, and clearing them creates staging space for packed boxes. Books come off shelves into small boxes, always small, because a large box of books cannot be lifted safely by anyone. Ornaments, pictures and mirrors are wrapped and boxed as each room is finished, so nothing fragile is left leaning against walls overnight.
Bedrooms come next. Wardrobe cartons are assembled in the doorway and hanging clothes travel straight across on their hangers, six seconds per garment instead of the folding marathon most people expect. Drawers are emptied into boxes rather than taped shut, which protects both the contents and the furniture. Beds stay made until moving day; nobody should sleep on a bare mattress the night before a move.
The living room and home office follow: electronics photographed before cables come out, cables bagged and taped to their device, remote controls boxed with the television they belong to. The kitchen goes last because you are still living in it. Plates are wrapped individually and packed on edge, glasses get double wrap, and the kettle, two mugs, tea, coffee and a teaspoon go into a clearly marked box that is loaded last and unloaded first. By late afternoon, a three-bedroom home is typically sixty to eighty labelled boxes, stacked by room, ready for the crew in the morning.
Packing quality is mostly materials quality. We use double-walled cardboard throughout, because single-wall supermarket boxes lose half their strength the second time they are stacked, and a collapsed box at the bottom of a van stack takes its neighbours with it. Packing paper does the everyday wrapping because it cushions without leaving the ink stains newspaper does. Bubble wrap is reserved for glass, ceramics and screens, layered rather than wasted. Wardrobe cartons, mattress bags, sofa covers and picture corners handle the items that boxes cannot.
Everything arrives with the team on the day, included in the fixed quote, and we take the leftover materials away after your move if you want rid of them. If you are buying materials from us to pack yourself, we will size the bundle honestly: a typical bedroom needs eight to ten boxes, a kitchen fifteen to twenty, and the whole of a three-bedroom house sixty to eighty, and it is always cheaper to have a few boxes spare than to run out at 9pm the night before your move.
A short list of things our teams cannot pack for transport, for safety and insurance reasons: gas bottles and camping gas, petrol, paint thinners and other flammables, garden chemicals, firearms without the correct arrangements, and anything perishable that will not survive the journey. Plan to run these down, give them away or dispose of them properly before moving week; your local household waste site in Medway takes most of them.
A second list should be packed only by you and travel only with you: passports and birth certificates, house deeds and solicitor paperwork, cash and jewellery, prescription medicines, laptops holding your working life, and the small irreplaceable things, the photographs, the ring, the children's first shoes. Not because our insurance would not cover them, but because some things should never be in a position to need insurance. Everything else in the house is ours to worry about, and we pack it as if it were our own.
One last practical note on timing: packing is booked as part of your removal date, so when Fridays and month-end dates fill up, the packing days before them fill at the same time. If you know you want a full pack, say so when you first request your quote rather than adding it later, because it changes which dates we can offer you. And if you are undecided, ask for the quote both ways; seeing the packing itemised as its own line makes the decision much easier than guessing at it.
