Every September and January we move students into halls and house shares across Kent, and every June we move them out again. A student move is usually one room: boxes, a bike, a desk chair, a television and a suitcase of clothes. It does not need a removal lorry, and it should not cost like one. It does deserve an insured professional rather than a stranger from a listings app, and that is exactly what we send, at a fixed price agreed before we load a single box.
A student removal is the simplest job we do, and we have built a service that keeps it that way. You tell us the two addresses, roughly how many boxes and large items are travelling, and the date term starts or the tenancy ends. We give you one fixed price that covers the van, an insured mover who actually helps carry, blankets and straps for anything fragile, and delivery into the right room at the other end, whether that is the third floor of halls or the back bedroom of a house share. The jobs we handle every term include:

Our depot in Rochester sits in the middle of Kent student country. The University of Kent and Canterbury Christ Church fill Canterbury with students, and the Medway campus shared by Kent, Greenwich and Canterbury Christ Church sits ten minutes from our base in Chatham Maritime, which means halls like Liberty Quays in Gillingham are practically on our doorstep. We also run students to and from the University of Greenwich in London, and every September we take Kent students up and down the motorways to universities across the country: Brighton, Portsmouth, Southampton, London in all its campuses, Essex, Nottingham, Birmingham and beyond.
Knowing the routes matters more than it sounds. We know which Canterbury streets around the St Dunstan's and Wincheap areas have permit parking that will swallow a careless hour, when the one-way system near the Medway campus clogs on arrivals weekend, and that halls arrival slots are strict enough that turning up in the wrong hour can mean queueing behind forty other cars. We plan student runs around all of it, which is why our September diary is built weeks in advance.
A student move is priced like our other small jobs: by load, distance and access, then fixed. A single room moved locally within Medway or Canterbury is our cheapest kind of move, typically well under £100. A room moved between Kent towns, say Gillingham to Canterbury, usually lands between £100 and £180. Longer runs to universities elsewhere in the South East are quoted by distance, and even a Kent to London or Kent to Brighton student run is normally a fraction of a full removal because the load is one room rather than one house. Parents splitting the cost with another family can sometimes share a van for two students heading to the same city at the start of term; ask when you call, because when the diary allows it, it cuts the price for both.
Most student moves are booked by parents, and most of the questions we get are really one question: who exactly is going to be alone in a van with my child's belongings, and sometimes with my child? With us the answer is specific. The mover is a directly employed, background-checked professional from the same crew that handles our family house removals. The van is ours, the insurance is comprehensive goods-in-transit and public liability cover on every job, and the company has a fixed address in Rochester, a landline, and more than fifty five-star Google reviews from your own county.
Listings-app van services can be cheaper on the screen, and sometimes genuinely fine. But the gap between a good one and a bad one is invisible until moving day, and the bad ones are uninsured, unaccountable and occasionally simply absent. For the sake of a few pounds on a once-a-term job, most families decide the certainty is worth more, which is why so much of our student work is repeat business: the same family, every September and June, until graduation.
June is the pressure point of the student year. Tenancies across Canterbury and Medway end in the same fortnight, deposits depend on rooms being emptied and cleaned, and every van in Kent is suddenly busy. We plan for it: extra student slots in the second half of June, early morning collections so rooms are clear before checkout inspections, and tip runs for the furniture and kitchenware that four housemates bought together and nobody wants to take home.
If the summer plan is messy, our storage service solves the common version of the problem: a room's worth of belongings that cannot come home but has nowhere to go until September. We collect at the end of term, store securely over the summer, and deliver to the new address when the next tenancy starts. One fixed price for the round trip, and no favours owed to anyone with a spare garage.
Call 01634 971005, WhatsApp 07359 917380, or send the quote form with the two postcodes, your date and a quick list or phone video of what is travelling. We price student moves within the hour during business hours. To keep the price at the bottom of its range: box everything before we arrive, because fifteen sealed boxes load four times faster than fifteen open bags; be accurate about the load, because we quote worst-case when we have to guess; tell us about stairs, lifts and parking at both ends; and be flexible on timing if you can, because a midweek slot is always easier than the last Saturday of September.
Universities publish arrival windows for halls, and landlords set checkout times for house shares. Tell us both and we will plan around them. Arriving in your allocated hour with a professional unload takes the stress out of a day that is emotional enough already, and getting a room emptied before a checkout inspection protects a deposit worth far more than the cost of the van.
Student moves go wrong in the packing more often than in the van, so here is the method our crews would use on your room. Start with the wardrobe and drawers, because clothes are the bulk of most student loads: bin liners are fine for soft clothes and pillows, but books, kitchenware and anything with corners belongs in a proper box, taped shut, light enough to carry up a staircase without a rest stop. Keep every box under about fifteen kilograms; a box you cannot lift comfortably is a box packed wrong. Wrap the television in its original carton if it survived the year, or in a duvet taped around it if not, and tell us it is travelling so it rides flat and padded. Chargers, documents, medication, laptop and anything irreplaceable go in one rucksack that travels with you, not in the van, so nothing important is ever more than an arm away.
Label every box with a name and the destination room, even for a one-room move, because halls corridors all look the same at 9pm on arrivals day and a named box finds its way home. Empty the mini fridge the night before and let it drain, defrosted, with the door propped open. Bikes travel well but need pedals or handlebars loosened for a tight van; tell us in advance and we bring the right straps. And if four housemates are leaving the same address on the same day, coordinate: one van doing two rooms in one run is cheaper per person than two vans doing one room each, and June availability stretches further when the jobs are combined.
Our student work follows the academic calendar as reliably as the tides. The third and fourth weekends of September are the heaviest moving days of the student year, when halls across Canterbury and the Medway campus open their doors and every A-road in Kent carries a convoy of estate cars. January brings a smaller wave of term-two starters and course changers. Easter sees a trickle of placement-year moves and early tenancy swaps. Then June arrives and everything happens at once: tenancies ending, deposits riding on checkout inspections, graduation moves home and storage collections for the students staying another year but not another summer. July and August are quiet, which makes them the cheapest months to move if your dates are flexible, and then September starts the cycle again.
The practical lesson for anyone booking: the closer your date sits to one of those peaks, the earlier you should call. A midweek move in early September books comfortably a fortnight out. The last Saturday of September needs a month. The final week of June is the single tightest stretch of our student year, and the families who book it in May get the slots the families who call in mid-June are hunting for.
Kent universities bring students from everywhere, and arriving in a new country with luggage, a lease and no car is its own kind of moving day. We collect from Gatwick, Heathrow, the Eurostar at Ebbsfleet and the ports, deliver to halls or private accommodation anywhere in Kent, and help at the other end of the course too, when three years of accumulated life has to shrink back into something shippable. We can run belongings to airport cargo agents and shippers in London, deliver boxes to a guarantor's address for safe keeping, or simply store everything with us between the end of one arrangement and the start of the next. Payment works by bank transfer or card, and we are used to coordinating by WhatsApp across time zones with parents arranging a move from another continent.
Everything that applies to our biggest removals applies to the smallest student job. The quote is itemised and fixed. The insurance is real and proof is available on request. The mover helps carry as standard, and for heavy items or awkward staircases we send two and the quote says so. We treat a student's boxes with the same care as a family's furniture, because to the person who packed them, the contents are worth exactly the same. And if your move is really a man and van job rather than a student special, the price will simply reflect the load either way; the label matters less than the service, and you can read more about how we handle small loads on our man and van page.
One last honest note for anyone comparing quotes: a student move is the easiest job in the world to underquote and then pad on the day, because the customer is young, often alone, and keen to get it over with. Fixed means fixed with us. The crew carries no card machine surprises and no story about stairs costing extra. If that is the kind of mover you want meeting your son or daughter outside halls, we are easy to find: Rochester based, 01634 971005, seven days a week.
The questions students and parents ask us most. Anything else, call 01634 971005 or WhatsApp 07359 917380 and we will sort it out quickly.
Fixed student prices, fully insured, and a crew that has carried boxes up every halls staircase in Kent. Quotes within 60 minutes during business hours.
